Northern Arizona Men’s Indoor Track & Field Named Commissioner’s Team of the Month Following Seventh Place Finish at Nationals

After running the DMR anchor leg, Sahlman’s success continued the next day, as he won the 3,000-meter

FARMINGTON, Utah (Apr. 2, 2026) – Propelled by a pair of National Championship titles, Northern Arizona Men’s Indoor Track & Field has been named Big Sky Conference Commissioner’s Team of the Month for March.

The Lumberjacks finished tied for seventh in the nation, scoring 20 points at the 2026 NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships in Fayetteville, Arkansas. That total placed them in a tie with Brigham Young University and South Carolina.

NAU’s first 10 points came in the distance medley relay, where a team comprised of Rheinhardt Harrison, Josiah Johnson, Tor Hotung-Davidsen and Colin Sahlman ran a 9:19.95 to outpace every other team in the country. With that result, the Lumberjacks became the first relay team in Big Sky Conference history to win a National Championship.

After running the DMR anchor leg, Sahlman’s success continued the next day, as he won the 3,000-meter with a time of 7:41.66. Initially, it appeared that Sahlman would be the national runner-up, but following a review of the race New Mexico’s was disqualified from the competition, which resulted in Sahlman claiming the gold medal.

With this result, Sahlman joins both Nico Young (3K and 5K in 2024) and Abdihamid Nur (3K and 5K in 2022) as Lumberjacks to complete a double at the NCAA Indoor National Championships in the last five season.

With the seventh place finish, this year’s NAU squad becomes just the fifth team in Big Sky Conference history to finish amongst the top-10 at the Men’s Indoor National Championship (1988 Boise State, 7th; 2022 Northern Arizona, 4th; 2023 Northern Arizona, 9th; 2024 Northern Arizona, 4th).

This is Northern Arizona’s first Team of the Month title from the Big Sky since the Women’s Outdoor Track & Field squad was honored for their performance in June of 2025.
