Weber State Softball Named Commissioner’s Team of the Month

In the NCAA Tournament, after opening play with a loss to Oregon, the Wildcats secured the Big Sky’s second-ever tournament victory

FARMINGTON, Utah (June 2, 2025) – After making a run through the Big Sky Conference Championship and securing the league’s first NCAA Tournament victory in softball since 2019, the Weber State softball team has been named Commissioner’s Team of the Month for May, the league office announced today.

No. 3-seeded Weber State’s tournament run began on May 7 in Greeley, Colorado, when they knocked off Montana 9-1 in its opening matchup of the Big Sky Championship.

The following day, the Wildcats emerged victorious in a tight matchup with Sacramento State 8-7 to start play 2-0 in Colorado. Sacramento State went up 4-0 in that contest, and then 7-2 before Weber State combined for six runs over the final three innings and held the Hornets scoreless in that same time frame.

To close out an impressive Thursday, the Wildcats knocked off regular season champion Idaho State 5-2 to secure a spot in the title game. Weber State jumped out to a 3-0 lead over the Bengals in the matchup and added two insurance runs in the fifth and sixth inning.

On championship day, both the trophy and the Big Sky’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament came down to a winner-take-all game, where the Wildcats topped Idaho State 10-4.

Weber State has now won the Big Sky tournament title five times since it began for softball in 2013.

Wildcat Olivia Birkinshaw was named Big Sky Tournament MVP, and was joined by teammates Sadie Kirk, Brooke Merrill, Taegan Smith and Mariyah Delgado on the All-Tournament Team.

In the NCAA Tournament, after opening play with a loss to Oregon, the Wildcats secured the Big Sky’s second-ever tournament victory with a 7-4 win against Binghamton. Birkinshaw finished with three RBI in the contest to pace the Wildcats.

Weber State was ultimately eliminated by Oregon in the Eugene Regional.
