Montana State Football Earns Commissioner’s Team of the Month Nod

After trailing 17-0 in their Week Zero opener against New Mexico, the Bobcats stormed back to top the Lobos 35-31

FARMINGTON, Utah (Sept. 5, 2024) – Following an impressive 2-0 start, which featured a massive victory over an FBS foe, the Montana State Bobcat football program has been named Commissioner’s Team of the Month for August, the Big Sky Conference office announced today.

After trailing 17-0 in their Week Zero opener against New Mexico, the Bobcats stormed back to top the Lobos 35-31. MSU found all kinds of momentum late, and outscored UNM 21-0 in the fourth quarter.

The Bobcats were led by 205 yards through the air and two passing touchdowns from quarterback Tommy Mellott, along with a trio of scores on the ground from three different players.

MSU’s success continued in Week One, where a trip to St. George, Utah, resulted in a 31-7 victory over Utah Tech. The Bobcats jumped out in dominating fashion, taking a 31-0 lead before the Trailblazers were able to get on the scoreboard late.

The 2-0 road record to open the season marks just the third time in program history for the Bobcats, with the other occurrences coming in 1957 and 1899.

Additionally, Montana State's Adam Jones was named the FCS National Freshman Player of the Week by Stats Perform FCS, after his great start to the 2024 season. Jones carried the ball 17 times for 167 yards the Week 0 win at New Mexico, with his 93-yard touchdown being the highlight of the game. He rushed for 62 yards and another score in MSU's 31-7 win at Utah Tech in Week 1 to cement his chances for the national honor.

MSU was picked second in the Big Sky Preseason Coaches’ and Media Polls heading into the season and are one of only four teams with a victory heading into Week Two.

The Bobcats will continue their season on Saturday evening with the annual ‘Gold Rush’ game as they play host to Maine at 6 p.m. MT on ESPN+ and Scripps Sports. They’ll wrap up their non-conference slate against Mercyhurst at home on Saturday, September 21 before opening Big Sky play at Idaho State the following weekend.
