Bobcat Football Named Commissioner’s Team of the Month

Montana State’s path to Frisco started at home inside Bobcat Stadium on December 7, when the ‘Cats knocked off UT Martin 49-17

FARMINGTON, Utah (Dec. 30, 2024) – After securing a trip to the FCS National Championship game in Frisco, Texas, the Montana State football team has been named Big Sky Conference Commissioner’s Team of the Month for December.

This marks the second Team of the Month honor for the Bobcats this year, after claiming the title in August.

The No. 1-seeded Bobcats are currently 15-0 and went 8-0 in Big Sky Conference play to secure a regular season title. Montana State was 12-0 in the regular season as well, marking the first time in school history the program had achieved that feat.

With the success of the season, Bobcat head coach Brent Vigen was named the 2024 Eddie Robinson Award winner, honoring the top head coach in the FCS.

Montana State’s path to Frisco started at home inside Bobcat Stadium on December 7, when the ‘Cats knocked off UT Martin 49-17. Quarterback Tommy Mellott had quite a showing against the Skyhawks, completing 22-of-25 passes for 300 yards and four touchdowns. Mellott is a finalist for the 2024 Walter Payton Award, honoring the top offensive player in the FCS.

The following week, in a Friday night contest that aired on ESPN, the Bobcats knocked off Big Sky foe Idaho 52-19 at home. The Bobcats and Vandals met in Bozeman this past October as well, where Montana State also claimed a victory 38-7 to go 2-0 on the year against their foes from Moscow.

With a trip to the National Championship on the line, the Bobcats handled business against South Dakota at home on ABC, knocking off the Coyotes 31-17. That victory also gave Montana State a 9-0 record at home this season.

Montana State will play North Dakota State on Monday, January 6 at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas at 5 p.m. MT. That contest will be available to watch on ESPN. This will be a rematch of the 2021 National Championship game, where the Bobcats fell to the Bison 38-10.
