Sahlman’s Big Sky Record 800-Meter Headlines Weekly T&F Awards

Nationally, this puts him No. 2 in the entire NCAA for the event

FARMINGTON, Utah (Apr. 29, 2024) – With the regular season winding down the Big Sky Conference office has released another round of Outdoor Track & Field Athlete of the Week award winners. 
 
Track & Field Athlete of the Week titles are awarded each week during the regular season that four or more teams compete.
 
Men's Track Athlete of the Week – Colin Sahlman, Northern Arizona
 
It’s been quite a season for Northern Arizona’s Colin Sahlman, and that continued this past weekend as he broke the Big Sky Conference record in the men’s 800-meter en route to earning Men’s Track Athlete of the Week honors.
 
Sahlman ran a 1:45.63 at the Desert Heat Classic, setting the new standard in Big Sky history. Idaho’s Lorenz Herrmann held the previous 800-meter record.
 
This mark is also a Northern Arizona school record.
 
Nationally, this puts him No. 2 in the entire NCAA for the event. This is on top of having the fastest 1,500-meter this season and second-fastest in collegiate history.

Men's Field Athlete of the Week – Cody Canard, Weber State
 
Cody Canard, the Big Sky leader in the men’s javelin, had another impressive weekend in the event leading to another weekly award.
 
He finished with a throw of 70.12m (230’ 1”) to finish as the runner-up at the 2024 BYU Robison Invitational.
 
This marks his third of the season. He is the Big Sky record holder in the event.

Women's Track Athlete of the Week – Elena Carter, Montana State
 
With the best 110-meter hurdle time in the Big Sky this season, and a new Montana State school record in the event, Bobcat Elena Carter has been named Women’s Track Athlete of the Week.
 
Carter ran a 13.41 before altitude conversion at the 2024 Bengal Invitational, winning the event and claiming then Big Sky’s top spot.

Co-Women's Field Athlete of the Week – Caitlin Simmons, EWU & Elena Carter, MSU
 
Finishing with the same mark at separate meets, Eastern Washington’s Caitlin Simmons and Carter have been named Co-Women’s Field Athlete of the Week.
 
Both lead to a 6.22m (20’ 5”) to set personal bests in the women’s long jump.
 
They are now tied for second in the event on the Big Sky leaderboard.
