Sac State’s Johnson Earns Second Player of the Week Title
After leading the Sacramento State Hornets to a 3-0 week, Prophet Johnson has been named Big Sky Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for the second time this season. Johnson was also named CollegeInsider.com National Player of the Week yesterday.
He averaged 29.3 points per game in Hornet Pavilion against Montana, Montana State and Weber State. Additionally, he ended the home stretch with 19 rebounds, 13 assists, 10 steals and two Blocks. In his 114 minutes he was incredibly efficient, shooting 63 percent from the field and 67 percent from three. In Big Sky play, Johnson is now averaging 20.0 points, 6.8 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 2.6 steals while shooting 49% from the field and 40% from the 3-point line. Johnson is the Big Sky leader in steals, second in rebounding and third in scoring.
Vikings Build Two-Game Cushion
Entering this week of action with a 9-1 Big Sky record, the Portland State Vikings have built a two-game lead in the pursuit of a regular season championship. Montana (7-3) and Montana State (7-3) are tied for second behind the Vikings, with the Bobcats holding the edge currently in terms of seeding with a victory over the Griz.
Portland State travels to Sacramento State on Saturday in Hornet Pavilion.
Hornet Pavilion Advantage
Speaking of Sacramento State’s home arena, the Hornets have built up a 9-1 record at home and are 5-0 in Big Sky play. After winning three-consecutive games this past week, they Hornets moved to 5-5 in league play.
Stat Leaders
Montana’s Money Williams is currently the Big Sky’s leading scorer in terms of total points, with 446 across 23 games for an average of 19.4 points per game. Portland State’s Terri Miller Jr. is tied with Williams at 19.4 ppg and has 387 total points through 20 appearances.
PSU’s Tre-Vaughn Minott remains the Big Sky’s top rebounds, averaging 8.6 rebounds per game through 21 appearances.
Northern Colorado’s Quinn Denker leads the Big Sky in assists, with a total of 148 for an average of 7.0 per game through 21 appearances. PSU’s Jaylin Henderson is second with an average of 6.3 per contest.
As mentioned above, SAC’s Johnson is the Big Sky steals leader with 56 total for an average of 2.7 per contest through 21 appearances.
Idaho State’s Evan Otten is the Big Sky’s blocked shots leader, with 43 on the season for an average of 1.9 per game through 23 contests.
Northern Colorado leads the Big Sky in total team offense, as the Bears are averaging 83.1 points per game through 23 contests. Portland State now leads the league in total team defense, allowing just 69.3 points per game through 21 games.
