Martin, Ohara win first #BigSkyTennis Player of the Week Honors for 2023

Portland State's Makoto Ohara clinched a 4-3 win for the Vikings over the weekend

FARMINGTON, Utah (Jan. 18, 2023) - Montana's Guillermo Martin and Portland State's Makoto Ohara were named the Big Sky Tennis Players of the Week to open the 2023 season, with Ohara highlighting the first weekend's action with a match-clincher to start the year. 

Men's Tennis Player of the Week - Guillermo Martin (Montana)
Montana's Guillermo Martin was named the Big Sky Men's Tennis Player of the Week after he won an impressive 6-2, 6-1 decision in singles play in his first action since returning from an injury in 2021. Martin was also on his way to winning in doubles action with partner Moritz Stoeger before the match went unfinished. Montana dropped a hard-fought match to North Dakota overall, with the Grizzlies surrendering a 4-3 defeat to open the year 0-1. 

Women's Tennis Player of the Week - Makoto Ohara (Portland State)
Portland State's Makoto Ohara was named the Big Sky Women's Tennis Player of the Week after clinching a 4-3 victory for the Vikings following her 7-5, 7-6(7) win at the No. 6 position. The Fugisawa, Japan native also won in doubles action with a 6-4 decision alongside partner Nika Beukers to secure the doubles point for the Vikings over the Aggies. The season-opening win was the first for the Vikings' women's tennis program since 2003.
