FARMINGTON, Utah (April 30, 2021) – Leading the Sacramento State Hornets to their fourth Big Sky Conference title, women’s golf head coach David Sutherland has been named 2021 Big Sky Coach of the Year.
This is Sutherland’s fourth Big Sky Women’s Golf Coach of the Year title, after claiming the honor in 2017, 2018 and 2019.
This year his team shot a 901 (298, 304, 299) at the Big Sky Conference Championship to outpace Northern Arizona for the league title. Redshirt freshman Tess Blair was the individual champion for the Hornets as well, shooting a 215.
SAC’s Jennifer Koga swept the Big Sky regular season individual awards as well, earning Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year from the league office.
The Hornets place four players on the All-Big Sky teams, with Corinne Viden (second-team) and Sydney Smith (honorable mention) joining Blair and Koga.
Their best performance of the regular season came in the Gunrock Invitational at Del Paso Country Club, where whey finished in second place by shooting a 852. That three-round score was a school record, and their third round score of 277 was the lowest individual team round in school history.
In that same tournament Blair shot a 66 in the third round to bring her three-round total to a 206, which broke her own school record.
Sutherland was hired at Sacramento State ahead of the 2007-08 season following a strong career on the PGA Tour.
