Sacramento State Holds One-Shot Lead Following 18 Holes at Men’s Golf Championship

The Hornets carded a 2-over 290 on Monday to enter Tuesday’s action one shot ahead of Idaho (+3).

LITCHFIELD PARK, Ariz. (Apr. 27, 2026) – The first 18 holes of competition are in the books at the 2026 Big Sky Conference Men’s Golf Championship at The Wigwam, where Sacramento State holds a one-shot lead over the rest of the field.
 
The Hornets carded a 2-over 290 on Monday to enter Tuesday’s action one shot ahead of Idaho (+3). The top-four teams in the field are very compressed, with Northern Colorado sitting at 5-over and Francis Marion carding 6-over as a unit.
 
Weber State (+11) and Eastern Washington (+15) round out the field in Litchfield Park.
 
On the individual leaderboard, Sacramento State’s Gabriel Smith currently holds the lead at 4-under through 18 holes. Smith is a Second Team All-Conference performer for the Hornets. He has a two-shot lead over Idaho’s Josh McCartain, who shot 2-under a day removed from being named Big Sky Player of the Year. Northern Colorado’s Cooper Tate rounded out the group of players under par at 1-under after 18 holes of play.
 
Both Idaho’s Samuel Johnson and Northern Colorado’s Thomas Barnes Grimes sit at even for the tournament.
 
Competition at The Wigwam will continue tomorrow morning at 7:30 a.m. MT / 6:30 a.m. PT with Round Two of the 2026 Big Sky Championship.
