Title IX Spotlight: Angela Chalmers

The Northern Arizona Alum captured the bronze medal in the 3,000 meters at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona.

FARMINGTON, Utah (April 20, 2023) - The 2022-23 season marks the 50th anniversary of the passing of Title IX, the law that prohibits sex-based discrimination in federally-funded education programs or activities and has helped create gender equality in sports. To celebrate this landmark, the Big Sky Conference is highlighting several inspiring female student-athletes from its member institutions, next up we take a look back at the career of Northern Arizona track star Angela Chalmers.

Chalmers competed for the Lumberjacks from 1982-1987 and blazed an impressive trail at Northern Arizona and throughout her entire career. The Brandon, Canada native was the Big Sky's first NCAA National Champion in cross country in 1986 and was a six-time All-American.

The Lumberjack placed eighth at the 1985 NCAA Cross Country Championships, second at the 1984 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championship in the 1500 meter and third in the mile at the 1983 NCAA Indoors. At the NCAA National Outdoor Track & Field Championship meets, she placed fifth in the 1,550 meters in 1984, second in the 3,000 meters in 1985, and was third in the 1,500 meters and fifth in the 3,000 meters during the 1987 season.

Chalmers holds records at Northern Arizona for the indoor 1,500-meter run and the outdoor 800 meters, 1,5000 meters and 3,000 meters

Chalmers success expanded past the Big Sky and her collegiate career as the Canadian athlete went on to compete in the 1988 and 1992 Olympics. In the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, Chalmers took home the bronze medal in the 3,000 meters.

The bronze-medalist was inducted to the Big Sky Hall of Fame in 2020.
