Northern Arizona Claims Two Runner-Up Team Finishes; Montana State Finishes 13th in Virginia

Northern Arizona’s men have now finished either first or second in every National Championship race since 2016

FARMINGTON, Utah (Nov. 18, 2023) – The 2023 men’s and women’s cross country seasons came to a close on Saturday morning in Virginia at the 2023 NCAA Division I Cross Country National Championships, where the Big Sky Conference secured a trio of impressive team performances.
 
Northern Arizona’s women started the day with a second place finish in the National Championship 6K, falling to eventual national champion NC State by a single point.
 
The Wolf Pack scored 123, while the Lumberjacks scored 124.
 
Gracelyn Larkin was the top finisher for NAU, crossing the line in 13th place at 19:35.6.
 
Coming into the day, the best finish in both Big Sky and Northern Arizona history came in 1991 when the Lumberjacks finished in third, making this year’s result the new league-best.
 
NAU’s women finished with three All-Americans, with Larkin, Annika Reiss and Elise Stearns all earning that honor.
 
In the National Championship 10K on the men’s side, the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks finished runner-up to Oklahoma State despite putting five across the line as All-Americans.
 
As a team, the ‘Jacks finished with 71 points, compared to Oklahoma State’s scored of 49 points. The Cowboys’ 49-point performance is the best nationals has had since 2005 when Wisconsin scored 37.
 
Drew Bosley and Nico Young finished in fifth and sixth respectively for the ‘Jacks.
 
Northern Arizona’s men have now finished either first or second in every National Championship race since 2016.
 
NAU’s 71 points today is the second-lowest total during its stretch of title runs.
 
Finishing well above their ranking of No. 29 coming into the meet, the Montana State Bobcats shot up the board and finished in 13th. That marks the second-best finish in program history for MSU.
 
In 2002, the Bobcats finished in 11th.
 
Running as an individual, Weber State’s Peter Visser finished in 150th place for the Wildcats.
