FARMINGTON, Utah (Oct. 23, 2023) – Montana State's dynamic duo of Tommy Mellott and Jon Johnson, along with Weber State's Kyle Thompson were tabbed as Big Sky Football Players of the Week after their impressive performances this past Saturday.
Offensive Player of the Week: Tommy Mellott (Montana State)
Tommy Mellott rushed for 105 yards and two touchdowns, while passing for 99 yards on 9-of-14 throwing the ball in Montana State's 42-30 win at No. 3 Sacramento State. Mellott's first touchdown run was an 11-yarder early in the third quarter that stretched MSU's lead to 21-7, and his second covered 11 yards, early in the fourth quarter, giving the Bobcats a 28-17 advantage. Mellott's ground total pushes his career yardage to 2,045, the second Bobcat signal caller over 2,000 career rushing yards and the most among primary quarterbacks.
Defensive Player of the Week: Jon Johnson (Montana State)
Jon Johnson had eight tackles, a pass breakup and an interception he returned for a touchdown in Montana State’s 42-30 win at No. 3 Sacramento State.
Johnson’s pick-6 came at a key time, with Sacramento State leading 7-0 in the second quarter, as the momentum swing helped jump start the Bobcats on the road.
Special Teams Player of the Week: Kyle Thompson (Weber State)
Kyle Thompson made three field goals in Weber State’s 31-23 loss at Eastern Washington. He made field goals of 44, 40, and 34 yards. It’s the second-straight week he has made three field goals.
