Sacramento State Claims 2021 Big Sky Men’s Golf Championship

BOULDER CITY, Nev. (April 27, 2021) – For the fourth time in program history the Sacramento State Hornets are Big Sky Conference champions for men’s golf, as they claimed the 2021 championship on Tuesday at Boulder Creek Golf Club.
 
With the victory the Hornets will represent the Big Sky Conference at NCAA Regionals, as they’ll received the league’s automatic bid.  
 
They had previously won team titles is 2017, 1997 and 1996.
 
Sacramento State ran away with the victory, shooting an even-par 864 over the course of the three rounds. After opening play with a 304 on Sunday, they improved each round with a 294 on Monday and a 285 on Tuesday.
 
Southern Utah finished a the runner-up with a 883 (304, 294, 285) and Idaho finished in third with a 390 (308, 291, 291). Weber State (891), Hartford (906), Northern Colorado (912) and Binghamton (918) rounded out the field of competition.  
 
SAC’s Ethan Davidson was the individual champion as well, shooting a 5-under 67 on Tuesday to bring his three-day total to a 2-under 214 (74, 73, 67). It was a tight battle between Davidson and defending Big Sky champion Jake Vincent over the final couple holes, but Davidson prevailed in the end. Vincent finished with a 1-under 215 (76, 68, 71).
 
Davidson’s individual title was also the fourth for the Hornets, following in the footsteps of now assistant coach Aaron Beverly (2017) and Robert Hamilton (1996 & 1994).
 
Hornet Jonathan Tanihana claimed third at the tournament with an even-par 216 (78, 69, 69).
 
Idaho’s Jack Plaster and Hartford’s Matthew Schwab rounded out the all-tournament team by shooting 1-over for the tournament.
 
Overall, it has been a very strong two weeks for Sacramento State golf, as the women’s team also claimed the 2021 Big Sky Conference Championship at Arrowhead Golf Club. Tess Blair was also the individual champion for the Hornets on the women’s side.
 
Selections for the 2021 NCAA Men’s Golf Regional Championships will be announced Wednesday, May 5 on the Golf Channel.
