#BigSkyMBB Recap: Week Five

A number of teams across the Big Sky Conference improved on their overall records this week across several contests

FARMINGTON, Utah (December 13, 2021) – The Big Sky Conference men’s basketball slate rolled on this week, as a number of teams improved upon their overall records as the calendar gets closer and closer to January. Teams are listed in order of the current Big Sky standings.  
 
Weber State (9-1, 2-0 BSC)

The top team in the Big Sky Conference to this point of the season suffered their first loss last week, as the Weber State Wildcats dropped a road contest to the Washington State Cougars. They rebounded on Saturday, as they blew out Maine-Fort Kent at home. Koby McEwen is the leading scorer for WSU, averaging 15.6 points per game through 10 contests. Weber State is receiving votes in the USA Today Coaches’ Poll.  
 
Southern Utah (7-3, 2-0 BSC)

Southern Utah started their week with a big victory, beating in-state rival Utah Valley. The Wolverines of UVU entered the contest receiving votes in the USA Today Coaches’ Poll, and the T-Birds were able to handle business behind 16 points from John Knight III. On Saturday, they blew out Saint Katherine 100-61.
 
Northern Colorado (6-5, 2-0 BSC)
South Dakota Recap
 
Northern Colorado had just one game last week, taking care of South Dakota at home 74-69. The Bears were led by Daylen Kountz, who finished the contest with 24 points on his stat line. Kountz is the leading scorer in the Big Sky Conference, averaging 18.9 ppg with 208 total.  
 
Montana (8-4, 1-1 BSC)

Highlighted by a single-game Big Sky Conference record, Montana went 3-0 this week with a trio of home victories. Against SAGU American Indian College, Griz guard Cameron Parker dished out 20 assists, which set a new Big Sky single-game record. The previous record of 18 was set back in 1988. Parker was working to outpace his performance against Yellowstone Christian, where stuffed the stat sheet with a triple double. Montana’s week started with an impressive performance against Air Force, where they ended up topping the Falcons by 18.
 
Montana State (7-4, 1-1 BSC)
North Dakota State Recap | Saint Thomas Recap
 
The Bobcats of Montana State went 2-0 on the week with a pair of big wins. On Tuesday they knocked off North Dakota State at home 68-48 before beating Saint Thomas on the road in Minnesota on Saturday 72-65. Saturday’s road victory was highlighted by a 20-point performance by Xavier Bishop, as he played 37 of the 40 minutes.
 
Northern Arizona (4-6, 1-1 BSC)

Northern Arizona lost a heartbreaker this week to South Dakota on the road 76-71. The contest went to overtime curtesy of NAU’s Jalen Cone, but the Lumberjacks ended up getting outscored by five in the extra period.
 
Portland State (3-5, 1-1 BSC)

The Vikings of Portland State dropped a tough contest at home against Cal Poly on Saturday despite a 20-point effort from Michael Carter III.
 
Eastern Washington (5-5, 0-1 BSC)

Splitting their contests last week, Eastern Washington fell to Colorado on the road in a close matchup before knocking off North Dakota in Grand Forks. In their win against the Fighting Hawks, EWU’s Rylan Bergersen finished with 20 points as he went a perfect 10-of-10 from the free throw line.
 
Idaho (2-8, 0-1 BSC)

Knocking off a good South Dakota State team at home, the Vandals of Idaho picked up their second win of the season before falling to CSU Bakersfield on the road. Against SDSU Idaho’s Mike Dixon had a day for the history books, as he went 16-of-16 from the free throw line. That ties him for the fifth-most single-game free throws made without a miss in Big Sky history. Dixon finished with 35, which is also the most a player has dropped in a single-game this year in the Big Sky,
 
Sacramento State (3-5, 0-2 BSC)
 
The Hornets of Sacramento State did not play this week due to schedule changes.
 
Idaho State (1-8, 0-2 BSC)

Going on the road and falling the a Pac-12 foe, the Idaho State Bengals went 0-1 this week in their lone contest. Robert Ford III led the way for them with 11 points.
