#BigSkyGolf Q&A w/ Northern Colorado's Joshua Matz
Joshua Matz, a senior from Agoura Hills, Calif., is the reigning Big Sky Men’s Golfer of the Year and a member of last year’s championship squad. He’s majoring in Psychology with a minor in Business Administration.
Being a native of Calif., how did you end up Northern Colorado as a school?
Actually, my dad and I, made a phone call to one of Coach Prenzlow’s childhood friends. I went on a visit to Northern Colorado and loved it. Everything about the school, views, players on the team, were meant to be.
What was it like to win the Big Sky team title last season and compete in the NCAA’s?
Oh, that was really cool. I can’t even…first time we wanted to prevail for each other and do well. It’s an individual sport, but the Big Sky Championships and the NCAA’s was the most fun I’ve ever had. We pulled for each other so hard. It was incredible. Hopefully we get to do it again this year.
When you found out you were named the golfer of the year last year, what was your initial reaction?
It’s a great accomplishment. I’m very thankful for receiving the award. It’s just another day, but at the same time it’s hard to look upon how great a year it was for me and my teammates who pushed me every day to achieve the award.
What’s your favorite thing about the Northern Colorado campus?
All of the student athletes know each other and that’s cool. Especially playing golf, some people think it’s not a sport if they haven’t played. But with all the other student-athletes, including basketball and football it’s great for them to admire what we do, and for us admire what they do. To know Jordan Davis (men’s basketball) and what he does and for him to know us and acknowledge what we do is pretty cool.
