GREELEY, Colorado (May 8, 2025) –
No. 3 seed Weber State knocked off top seeds Idaho State and Sacramento State on Thursday, as the Wildcats punched their ticket to Saturday's Big Sky Softball Championship final.
Weber State mounted a six-run rally against No. 2 seed Sacramento State to win 8-7 to start the day, before closing out the night with a 5-2 victory over No. 1 seed Idaho State. The Wildcats will face either Idaho State, Sacramento State or Northern Colorado, who face off on Friday for the right to face Weber State in Saturday's title game.
Game 4: No. 3 Weber State 8, No. 2 Sacramento State 7
No. 3 seed Weber State rallied from a 7-2 deficit to knock off No. 2 seed Sacramento State, 8-7, to open play on Thursday, as the Wildcats kept their momentum rolling in Greeley.
Co-Big Sky Freshman of the Year
Sadie Kirk got the Weber State rally started in the fifth inning with a home run, before triples by
Taegan Smith and
Riley Whalen in the sixth and seventh innings brought home a pair of runners each time. In the circle, the Wildcats used a pair of pitchers in only an inning of work to open the game, before
Jayci Finch came in relief for the final six innings to close down the Hornets and get the win.
Game 5: No. 4 Northern Colorado 19, No. 6 Montana 9
In the first elimination game of the tournament, No. 4 seed Northern Colorado and No. 6 seed Montana combined for 28 runs, as the Bears overpowered the Griz with a 19-9, run-rule win. UNC put up back-to-back six spots in the second and third innings, before following it up with another five runs in the fourth to bury Montana's tournament aspirations.
The Bears had four different players hit long balls, with centerfielder
Nya Chacon blasting two of her own to rack up a tournament-tying high of six RBIs for the game. Teammate and catcher
Sabrina Javorsky was not far behind Chacon's RBI total, as she drove in five herself.
Game 6: No. 2 Sacramento State 15, No. 5 Portland State 4
No. 2 seed Sacramento State eliminated No. 5 seed Portland State, as the Hornets didn't relinquish its large lead against the Vikings with the 15-4 win. The Hornets scored three runs in the first, second and fourth innings, before scoring six in the fifth inning to earn the run-rule win and put away any hope of a Viking comeback.
Alexa Carino led the Hornets with a tournament-tying high of six RBIs for the game, as the freshman tacked on a homer and double to her statline. The Hornets had four players earn two RBIs each to help Carino's efforts in driving in runs for Sac State on Thursday evening.
Game 7: No. 3 Weber State 5, No. 1 Idaho State 2
Weber State followed up its win over No. 2 seed Sacramento State with an upset of No. 1 seed Idaho State in the night cap, as the Wildcats held on for a 5-2 win over the Bengals. The win secures a spot for Weber State in Saturday's championship final, with the Wildcats facing either Idaho State, Sacramento State or Northern Colorado for the title following the trio's games on Friday.
After using three pitchers to start the day, Weber State got a complete-game showing from
Cali McGraw as she went the full seven innings in the 5-2 win. McGraw threw 96 pitches, allowing just three hits and two earned runs on the night. Co-Big Sky Freshman of the Year
Sadie Kirk came up big for the Wildcats in the night cap as well, matching her two-RBI performance from earlier in the day.
