GREELEY, Colorado (May 7, 2025) –
Rain pushed back play deep into Wednesday night, as three games were completed in the Big Sky Softball Championship following a 12-plus hour day in Greeley, Colorado.
The last two games of the day were highlighted by run-rule wins, with top seed Idaho State getting a 10-2 victory over tournament-host Northern Colorado, before Weber State earned a 9-1 win against Montana earlier in the evening.
Weber State and Sacramento State will open play on Thursday morning, with the final game of the original "opening day" being completed two days later. The winner is scheduled to face Idaho State later on Thursday, with the victor from that game being only one win away from Saturday's championship final.
Game 1: No. 4 Northern Colorado 7, No. 5 Portland State 5
Following a washout on Tuesday, Northern Colorado and Portland State resumed their game in the fourth inning on Wednesday morning, with the score knotted at 4-4. The fourth-seeded Bears scored three runs to extend their lead over the fifth-seeded Vikings, as the tournament hosts won 7-5 on Wednesday.
Last year's tournament MVP,
Amailee Morales, homered for the Bears on Tuesday and raked in three RBIs to lead the Bears. UNC was lifted on Wednesday by a string of hits from
Krista Francia,
Sabrina Javorsky and
Nya Chacon to score three runs for the Bears after play was resumed in the fourth inning.
Game 2: No. 3 Weber State 9, No. 6 Montana 1 (F/5)
The second game of Wednesday and the tournament also endured weather delays, but action finally concluded later in the evening as No. 3 seed Weber State walked-off a 9-1 victory against No. 6 seed Montana in the fifth inning to earn the run-rule win.
Weber State's
Olivia Birkinshaw led the Wildcats with three RBI on the day, after hitting a pair of home runs in the third and fifth innings.
Brooke Merrill pitched five innings of work in the win, allowing just one run and three hits against the Griz.
Game 3: No. 1 Idaho State 10, No. 4 Northern Colorado 2 (F/5)
Idaho State and Northern Colorado battled more rain delays in the night cap from Greeley, with the top-seeded Bengals outscoring the Bears 10-1 after a 1-0 deficit following the first inning. The Bengals were led by
Alyssa Yee,
Olivia Robison and
Belle Navarrete at the plate, with the trio getting a pair of RBIs each to spur on the run-rule win.
