Sacramento State Claims 2024 Men’s Golf Title; Idaho’s Sykes Earns Individual Crown at The Wigwam

For Sacramento State, this is its first championship since 2021

LITCHFIELD PARK, Ariz. (Apr. 25, 2024) – Sacramento State claimed more hardware to close out the 2024 Big Sky Conference Men’s Golf Championship at The Wigwam on Thursday afternoon, in what was a tightly contested round from start to finish.
 
The Hornets shot 8-over on Thursday but held a big enough lead coming in that they were able to secure the victory by three strokes. They ended play by carding a 2-under 862 (281, 285, 296) as a unit.
 
Weber State finished as the runners-up, shooting 1-over for the tournament.  
 
The Idaho Vandals finished in third, shooting 4-over on Thursday to push both SAC and WSU until the closing holes and ultimately end play at 2-over (866).
 
Northern Colorado finished in fourth at 12-over.
 
For Sacramento State, this is its first championship since 2021, and the third for the program since men’s golf was reinstated in 2015 (2017, 2021, 2024). It’s also the fifth in its Big Sky history (adding in 1996 and 1997).
 
Sacramento State in back-to-back weeks claimed both the Big Sky Men’s Golf and Women’s Golf Big Sky Conference Championship trophies.
 
Individually, Idaho’s Joe Sykes claimed the Big Sky Conference crown with a 7-under performance over the course of the tournament. He matched the best score in the third and final round as well, shooting 2-over through windy conditions on Thursday.
 
He’s only the second Vandal ever to earn Big Sky individual medalist honors, joining Jared du Toit, who claimed the title in 2015.
 
Weber State’s Isaac Buerger and Sacramento State’s Gabriel Smith finished tie for second, both shooting 4-under over three rounds.
 
Both the Sacramento State Hornets and Idaho’s Sykes will represent the Big Sky Conference at NCAA Regional competition in May.
 
The 2024 NCAA DI men's golf championship begins with a 2 p.m. ET selection show on Golf Channel on Wednesday, May 1. The championship concludes March 24-29 in Carlsbad, California.
