#BigSkyFB Week 1 Recap: Seven Teams Earn Wins

Weber State opened its 2023 season at home this past Thursday night

FARMINGTON, Utah (Sept. 3, 2023) — The first week of the 2023 football season is officially in the books, as seven Big Sky squads begin the year undefeated. Idaho, Sacramento State, UC Davis and Weber State all earned their victories on Thursday night, while Cal Poly, Montana and Montana State took wins on Saturday.   

Below is a preview to each team's recap following Week 1 action in the Big Sky.

THIBODAUX, Louisiana (Aug. 31, 2023) — Sacramento State jumped out to an early lead, withstood a surge from Nicholls, and then pulled away for a 38-24 win over the Colonels on Thursday night at Guidry Stadium. With the win, the eighth-ranked Hornets improved to 1-0 on the season and extended their regular season win streak to 20 games and its road win streak against FCS teams to 15 games.

COMMERCE, Texas (Aug. 31, 2023) — UC Davis used a huge 279-yard showing on the ground, including 109 yards from Lan Larison and five rushing touchdowns to pick up a 48-10 win against Texas A&M-Commerce Thursday night on the road at Ernest Hawkins Field at Memorial Stadium.

BEAUMONT, Texas (Aug. 31, 2023)  – Gevani McCoy found Hayden Hatten for a six-yard touchdown pass to cap a 70-yard opening drive. It was the beginning of a dominating 42-17 season-opening win for Idaho Vandals on the road at Lamar.

MINNEAPOLIS (Sept. 2, 2023) — The Eastern Washington Eagles battled all afternoon at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, but the #2-ranked North Dakota State Bison pulled away in the second half, downing the Eags, 35-10. Receiver Nolan Ulm scored Eastern's lone touchdown on a 34-yard strike from Kekoa Visperas in the first quarter.
