Montana, Northern Arizona Nab First Weekly Soccer Honors

Helping navigate the Griz to a 2-0 weekend, which is the best start of any Big Sky program to this point of the season, Montana’s Molly Quarry has earned the title of Defensive Player of the Week

FARMINGTON, Utah (August 22, 2023) – The Big Sky Conference office has announced its first weekly awards of the 2023-24 athletic calendar, with both Montana and Northern Arizona receiving recognition for the opening weekend of competition.
 
Co-Offensive Player of the Week: Delaney Lou Schorr (UM) & Maddie Shafer (NAU)
 
With each player scoring a goal and dishing out an assist while their teams recorded positive results across the board, Montana’s Delaney Lou Schorr and Northern Arizona’s Maddie Shafter have been named Co-Offensive Player of the Week following the opening weekend.
 
Schorr totaled three points as Montana swept its road trip to North Dakota and North Dakota State. She scored the game-winning goal in the 58th minute in Thursday's 1-0 victory at North Dakota and assisted on Skyleigh Thompson's opening goal just 1:40 into the match in Sunday's 3-1 win at NDSU.
 
Shafer led the ‘Jacks to their first win of the regular season against Conference USA opponent UTEP in Texas. With a 3-2 victory, NAU's senior forward recorded an assist along with the game-winning goal.
 
Defensive Player of the Week: Molly Quarry (UM)
 
Helping navigate the Griz to a 2-0 weekend, which is the best start of any Big Sky program to this point of the season, Montana’s Molly Quarry has earned the title of Defensive Player of the Week.
 
She played 120 minutes as Montana limited North Dakota and North Dakota State to one goal, 13 shots, six shots on goal. Additionally, she had assists on Montana's first and second goals in Sunday's 3-1 win at North Dakota State.
 
2023 Championship Information
 
The 2023 Big Sky Soccer Championships will be hosted on Nov. 1, 3, and 5 on the campus of the Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Ariz. The top six teams in the conference regular season standings advance to the championship.
 
The winner of the championship receives the Big Sky’s automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament.
 
Flagstaff will serve as the host city for the first time since 2010 when the Lumberjacks won the regular season championship. The host institution hasn’t won the postseason tournament since 2019 when Northern Colorado won on their home grass.
