FBS foe San Jose State (1-0) was too much to handle for Southern Utah (0-1) in its season-opener, as the Spartans defeated the Thunderbirds, 45-14 at home. After falling behind 21-0, the Thunderbirds pulled out their version of the "Philly Special" as wide receiver Judd Cockett tossed an eight-yard pass to quarterback Justin Miller to score off the trick play. Kobe Singleton would score the final SUU touchdown of the night, as the cornerback picked off SJSU quarterback Nick Starkel and raced down the sideline for an 18-yard score.
