2022 #BigSkyFB Weekly Recap: Week 8

Tommy Mellott rushed for 273 yards and three touchdowns, while throwing for another score to lead third-ranked Montana State to a 43-38 win over fifth-ranked Weber State on Saturday.

FARMINGTON, Utah (Oct. 23, 2022) - Three teams remain undefeated in the Big Sky, with ranked victories from Montana State and Sacramento State highlighting a wild Saturday in the league. Below is a recap of every Big Sky football game from this past week.

#3 Montana State 43, #5 Weber State 38

BOZEMAN (Oct. 22, 2022) – Tommy Mellott rushed for 273 yards and three touchdowns, while throwing for another score to lead third-ranked Montana State to a 43-38 win over fifth-ranked Weber State on Saturday. The Bobcats, who trailed 24-9 at one point, scored 34 unanswered points before holding off a Wildcat rally to secure the win. Montana State has now won 17 straight home games, which is the longest active streak in the FCS and a program best for the Bobcats.

MOSCOW (Oct. 22, 2022) – Idaho scored 35 unanswered points in the second half to defeat visiting Portland State 56-21 on Saturday and stay unbeaten in the Big Sky. Idaho quarterback Gevani McCoy led the Vandal offense after scoring five total touchdowns, with one of those scores being a 14-yard reception from running back Elisha Cummings. The Vandals are now 4-0 in the Big Sky for the first time since 1994. 

Northern Arizona 24, Idaho State 10

POCATELLO (Oct. 22, 2022) – Northern Arizona racked up 16 tackles for loss and six sacks to earn a 24-10 victory over Idaho State in Holt Arena this past Saturday. The Lumberjack defense was led by Eloi Kwete, who earned 10 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss and a pair of sacks on the day. RJ Martinez scored two touchdowns to lead NAU's offense, with one coming through the air and the other on the ground. 

UC Davis 58, Northern Colorado 10

GREELEY (Oct. 22, 2022) – UC Davis posted its second straight 50-point game as the Aggies earned a 58-10 victory at Northern Colorado on Saturday. UC Davis quarterback Miles Hastings completed 18-of-21 passes for 251 yards and three touchdowns on the day, while Lan Larison and Ulonzo Gilliam Jr., combined for 142 yards rushing to round out the offensive attack. After last week's 56-point performance, the Aggies have scored 114 points in the last two weeks which is the most in back-to-back games for UC Davis since 2000. 

Eastern Washington 17, Cal Poly 10

SAN LUIS OBISPO (Oct. 22, 2022) – Eastern Washington won its first Big Sky game of the season as the Eagles earned a 17-10 win at Cal Poly on Saturday. The Eagle defense forced five turnovers and held the Mustangs scoreless in the second half on Saturday, with the 10 points allowed being the lowest for EWU since last season's 19-9 victory over Northern Iowa in the first round of the FCS Playoffs.

SACRAMENTO (Oct. 22, 2022) – Second-ranked Sacramento State and seventh-ranked Montana put on a show for its ESPN2 national audience on Saturday evening, as the Hornets rallied to score the game's final 17 points and earn a 31-24 victory in overtime. The Hornets never led in regulation and took its first lead of the game in overtime following Asher O'Hara's second rushing score of the night. Sacramento State is now 7-0 for the first time in school history and has won its last three games over Montana, all coming under head coach Troy Taylor.
