Northern Arizona Sweeps 2021 Big Sky Outdoor T&F Team Titles

OGDEN, Utah (May 15, 2021) – In dominating fashion, the Lumberjacks of Northern Arizona swept the team titles at the Men's and Women's Big Sky 2021 Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Chick Heslop Track inside Stewart Stadium.
 
This is the fifth time in the history of both programs that they have won the championship in the same year.
 
NAU's women's squad scored 201 points en route to their victory, which was the first time a women's team has scored over 200 points in a conference championship since 2011.
 
It is the 13th Big Sky Conference title in NAU's women's history, and their fifth since 2010.
 
Lumberjack Matilde Roe was named Big Sky Women's Outdoor Track & Field Most Valuable Athlete, after claiming the gold medal in both the discus and the shot put, all while totaling 25 points.
 
In the women's 5,000-meter NAU had Taryn O'Neill, Jeralyn Poe, Jessa Hanson and Delaney Rasmussen finish in second, third, fifth and eighth respectively, to secure 19 points on a single event.
 
NAU secured the gold medal in the 800-meter (Maggi Congdon), 1500-meter (O'Neill), women's 4x100-meter relay and shot put (Roe) on Saturday.
 
Montana State's Carley VonHeeder was named Big Sky Women's Outdoor Track & Field Most Outstanding Performer for her mark in the women's javelin, where she hit a 52.99m (173' 10").
 
On the men's side the Lumberjacks scored 168 points to finish on top of the Big Sky once again. This is their 24th Big Sky Conference men's outdoor title, and their 11th since 2000.  
 
Scoring 22 points for his team, Northern Arizona's Luis Grijalva was named Big Sky Men's Outdoor Track & Field Most Valuable Athlete.
 
NAU flexed their distance muscles in the 5,000-meter, where they posted first (Abdihamid Nur), second (Nico Young), fourth (Ryan Raff) and fifth place finishes (Grijalva).
 
Eastern Washington's Parker Bowden was named Big Sky Men's Outdoor Track & Field, running the second-fastest 110-meter hurdles time in the history of the Big Sky Conference at 13.58.
 
Next up for several Big Sky Conference student-athletes will be the NCAA West Regionals in College Station, Texas.
