OGDEN, Utah (May 14, 2021) – Three of the four days of competition are complete at the 2021 Big Sky Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Chick Heslop Track inside Stewart Stadium, with a number of notable performances on Friday in Ogden.
In the first event of the day on the track Montana State’s Duncan Hamilton set a Stewart Stadium record in the men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 8:53.91, claiming 10 points for the Bobcats. Weber State’s Bronson Winter and Eastern Washington’s Justin Roosma finished second and third in the event respectively.
Setting a Big Sky Championship record, Weber State’s Summer Allen hit a 9:58.04 in the women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase to claim the gold medal. Her time was also a Stewart Stadium record. Idaho’s Malaina Thacker finished in second to claim the silver medal with a 10:24.94 and Northern Arizona’s Mikayla Malaspina ran a 10:31.58 to finish with the bronze.
Montana State’s Lucy Corbett won the women’s high jump with a mark of 1.83m (6’ 0”) to score 10 points for the Bobcats. Weber State’s Paige Van Meeteren finished in second with a jump of 1.77m (5’ 9 ¾”) and Montana’s Abby Dodge finished in third with a 1.71m (5’ 7 ¼”).
The women’s hammer throw went to Montana’s Tanessa Morris, who threw a 60.67m (199’ 0”) to claim the gold medal. EWU’s Vernice Keyes hit a 55.27m (181’ 4”) and Northern Arizona had both third and fourth place finishes in the event with Jennifer Slater and McKenna Chaney claiming bronze and finishing in fourth respectively.
Weber State was able to rack up points in the men’s pole vault, with a first, third and fourth place finishers. Wildcat Lachlan Burns claimed the gold medal with a jump that cleared 5.25m (17’ 2 ¾”).
Idaho’s Zack Short won the men’s shot put with a throw of 18.99m (62’ 3 ¾”), and was followed by a trio of Lumberjacks as Northern Arizona took the second, third and fourth spots.
Southern Utah’s Elizabeth White won the women’s long jump with a mark of 5.88m (19’ 3 ½”) to claim 10 points for the Thunderbirds. Idaho’s Tyler LyDay and Idaho State’s Ashley VanVleet-Sturgis finished in second and third respectively, both jumping a 5.82m (19’ 1 ¼”).
Montana State’s Cantor Coverdell won the men’s javelin with a throw of 67.46m (221’ 4”), taking the gold medal back to Bozeman. EWU’s Gavin Lee finished with the silver medal, throwing the javelin 66.54m (218’ 3”). SUU’s Chase Clement was the bronze finisher with a 64.96m (213’ 1”).
Northern Arizona’s Matilde Roe claimed the gold medal in the women’s discus, hitting a 49.68m (163’ 0”) mark. Southern Utah’s Amy Pouliot earned the silver medal with a toss of 49.03m (160’ 10”) and Sacramento State’s Shantel Nnaji took the bronze back to the Golden State with a throw of 48.72m (159’ 10”).
Weber State continued their success in the final field event of the day, as Xakai Harry hit a 7.77m (25’ 6”) to claim the gold medal.
In the final men’s track event of the day resulted in 10 points for Northern Arizona, as Ryan Raff won the men’s 10,000-meter with a time of 29:54.79. Montana State’s Collin Buck finished in second with a 29:29.71, and Aidan Reed took third for Southern Utah with a time of 30:07.33.
Last up on the track was the women’s 10,000-meter, where Weber State’s Lexie Thomas broke Big Sky Conference Championship record and the Stewart Stadium record with a 34:23.55. Thompson’s gold medal performance solidified a strong regular season for the Wildcats.
With a full day of competition to go, Weber State leads on the men’s side with 77 points, followed by Montana State in second with 51 and Northern Arizona in third with 40.
On the women’s side, Northern Arizona holds with lead with 47 points, followed by Weber State with 46 and Idaho State with 40.
There will be nothing but finals on Saturday. Field events will begin with the men’s hammer at 9:30 a.m. MT and running events inside Stewart Stadium will start at 2:00 p.m. MT with the 4x100 relays.
