BOISE, Idaho (March 8, 2021) – Southern Utah senior John Knight III was named the Big Sky Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for the first time after setting a career-high in points on back-to-back nights last week to help lead the Thunderbirds to their first Big Sky regular-season title.

Knight III scored a career-high 26 points in both of Southern Utah’s games against Portland State and shot an impressive 75 percent from the field.

In Thursday’s 68-58 win, Knight III had seven rebounds, four assists, and two steals to go along with 26 points. He went 7-of-11 from the floor and 12-of-16 from the free throw line to lead the Thunderbirds.

He was lights out on Saturday to help Southern Utah secure the regular-season title. His 26 points came on 11-of-13 shooting and he added five assists, four rebounds, two steals, and one block.

The Thunderbirds have now earned four Player of the Week accolades this season, which marks the first time Southern Utah has collected four honors during the same season since joining the Big Sky in 2012.

Southern Utah clinched the No. 1 seed for the championship tournament after the sweep over Portland State. The Thunderbirds will await the winner between No. 8 Northern Colorado and No. 9 Sacramento State in Thursday’s quarterfinal game.
