SUU's Marin Named #BigSkyMBB Player of the Week
FARMINGTON, Utah (March 1, 2021) – Southern Utah senior Dre Marin helped lead Southern Utah to a conference sweep over Northern Arizona last week to be named the Big Sky Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for the first time in his career.
Marin surpassed the 1,000-point barrier for the Thunderbirds in Wednesday’s victory, becoming the 12th player in Southern Utah men’s basketball history to meet the milestone. He also moved into seventh in scoring in the team’s Division I history following the weekend sweep of the Lumberjacks.
Across the two games for the Thunderbirds, Marin averaged 20.5 points per game and 4.5 rebounds per game and shot 64 percent from the field, 43 percent from three-point range, and a perfect 100 percent from the free throw line.
In Wednesday’s 85-80 home win, Marin posted 21 points, six rebounds, four steals, and four assists. He went 6-of-10 from the floor, 3-of-7 from behind the arc, and 6-of-6 from the free throw line. Marin’s performance helped the Thunderbirds finish the season with a 14-0 home record, which marks the first time Southern Utah has gone undefeated at home since the 2000-01 season.
He recorded another 20-point performance on Friday to help lead Southern Utah to a 92-62 road victory in Flagstaff. Marin scored 20 points on 8-of-12 shooting, including 3-of-7 from three-point range and 1-of-1 from the free throw line, and added three rebounds, one steal, and one assist.
With the conference sweep over Northern Arizona, Southern Utah remains in second place in the Big Sky standings with a 10-2 record. The team will look to finish the regular season with two more victories as the Thunderbirds get ready to travel to Portland to take on Portland State on Thursday and Saturday.
