FEINSTEIN NAMED CHAIR OF THE BIG SKY CONFERENCE’S PRESIDENTS’ COUNCIL
FARMINGTON, Utah (June 3, 2020) - The Big Sky Conference’s Presidents’ Council unanimously elected University of Northern Colorado President Andy Feinstein as its next chair during the league’s virtual Spring Meetings that concluded yesterday. The Council also elected Weber State University President Brad Mortensen as its new vice chair.
“Athletics serves as an integral part of the college experience, provides valuable opportunities for student-athletes to learn and grow, and keeps alumni and friends connected to our institutions,” Feinstein said. “We face many challenges today in sustaining these opportunities, including the COVID-19 pandemic that suspended activities in the spring and presents obstacles for the fall. I look forward to working closely with Commissioner Tom Wistrcill and his team, as well as the Big Sky presidents and athletics directors, to ensure that collegiate athletics continues to thrive across the conference.”
Feinstein, who became UNC’s president two years ago, will be joined on the Big Sky’s Executive Committee by both Mortensen and Sacramento State President Robert Nelsen, whose term as chair ends on June 30. Feinstein’s appointment begins July 1 and will last for two years. Mortensen also begin serving at that time for a one-year tenure.
“President Feinstein has quickly gained the confidence of his presidential peers, and he is deserving of and prepared for this pivotal leadership position during this critical time in higher education and college athletics,” Wistrcill said. “My staff and I eagerly look forward to working closely with him, the Executive Committee, and the entire Presidents’ Council as we continue to collectively build the Big Sky into the preeminent NCAA Division I FCS conference.”
Southern Utah University President and current vice chair Scott Wyatt as well as Northern Arizona University President and past chair Rita Cheng conclude their terms on the Executive Committee on June 30.
In additional appointments, Northern Arizona University’s Alisse Ali-Joseph will serve as chair of both the Conference and the Faculty Athletic Representative councils, while Southern Utah University Faculty Athletic Representative Scott Munro will serve as vice chair. Eastern Washington University Athletic Director Lynn Hickey and Senior Woman Administrator Sarah Adams will be the co-chairs of the Joint Athletic Council.
