Records Fall on Final Day of #BigSkyTF Indoor Championships, Northern Arizona Wins Team Titles

POCATELLO, Idaho (February 29, 2020) –The Northern Arizona men claimed their ninth straight Big Sky Indoor Championship team title and the women reclaimed the indoor crown to win three in the past four years.
On the men’s side, the NAU men scored 141.5 points to win the team title but the surprising performances came from the individual athletes. Luis Grijalva was crowned the champion in the mile with a time of 4:09.79. NAU also finished second and third in that event with Theo Quax and Geordie Beamish crossing the line behind Grijalva.
The 3,000-meters was no different for the Lumberjacks who took the top four spots. Abdihamid Nur won the event with a time of 8:17.30 and teammates Blaise Ferro, Tyler Day, and Luis Grajlva crossing the line next.
Records where broken at the indoor championships by a pair of Idaho State athletes. In the 60 meter hurdles, Tanner Conner set a new Big Sky championships and all-time record with a time of 7.73 seconds. The previous championship record of 7.79 seconds was set in 2011 by Sacramento States Ronald Brookins. Brookins also held the all-time record of 7.75 seconds since 2011.
Treyshon Malone also set a new Big Sky Championships record in the 200-meters. His record-setting performance came a day after breaking the record in the preliminaries. Malone had a time of 20.94 seconds in the 200-meters to claim the title.
Malone was named the Outstanding Performer and the Most Valuable Athlete at the championships and Nur was named the Freshman of the Year.
On the women’s side, NAU Mikayla Malaspina led the Lumberjacks to the team title with outstanding performances in the mile and the 3,000-meters.
In the mile five NAU runners placed in the top-10 with Malaspina placing second with a time of 4:54.78. Malaspina also scored with four other NAU runners in the 3,000-meters with a time of 9:47.05
Weber State’s Emily Morgan-King set a new Big Sky championship and all-time record in the 200-meters with a time of 23.71 seconds. The previous record was set by Jasmine Malone in 2018 and stood at 23.75 seconds. Morgan-King’s time also beat the Weber State record that stood for the past 28 years.
Morgan-King also broke a school record in the 60-meters with a time of 7.42 seconds.
Freshman of the Year honors went to Kelsey Sorenson of Idaho. The championship’s Outstanding Performer went to Idaho State’s Ashley VanVleet Sturgis and the Most Valuable Athlete was NAU’s Malaspina.
