FARMINGTON, Utah (January 27, 2020) – In pursuit of a fourth-straight Big Sky Conference softball title, Weber State has been picked to win the league in 2020 as voted on by the conference’s head coaches.

The Wildcats are coming off a historic season where they recorded the Big Sky’s first NCAA Tournament win following a 7-3 victory over Cal State Fullerton in the Los Angeles Regional. Weber State coasted through regular season play with a 14-2 mark against Big Sky opponents for the best winning percentage in league history (.875).

Under the direction of reigning Big Sky Coach of the Year Mary Kay Amicone, the Wildcats return a wealth of talent off last year’s squad with six All-Big Sky honorees including 2019 Big Sky Player of the Year Takesha Saltern.

Weber State totaled 35 points in the poll with five first-place votes.

Sacramento State received one first-place vote and 28 points to come in second in the poll. The Hornets made a seventh-straight trip to the Big Sky Championship last season and return five starters for the 2020 campaign.

Falling in closely behind the Hornets were Portland State and Montana with 25 points apiece. The Vikings collected the final first-place vote.

Portland State and Montana enter the 2020 season in good standing to contend for the 2020 title with eight starters returning for both squads.

Idaho State was selected fifth in the poll with 14 points, one point ahead of Northern Colorado. The Bengals finished second in the regular-season standings a season ago and will be guided by first-year head coach Cristal Brown. The Bears have advanced to the Big Sky Championship game the past two seasons as the No. 6 seed.

Under first-year coach Don Don Williams, Southern Utah was selected seventh with seven points.

The 2020 season gets underway Thursday, Feb. 6 with all seven teams in action during the opening weekend. Weber State will host the 2020 Big Sky Championship, May 6-9, at the Wildcat Softball Complex in Ogden, Utah.
