FARMINGTON, Utah (January 23, 2020) -- The 2019 Big Sky volleyball season will be one to remember as the season went down to the wire and the final championship game was one for the record books.
- NAU’s Abby Stomp named a CoSIDA third team Academic All-American
- UNC Kailey Jo Ince was named AVCA Midwest All Region and Daisy Schultz was a Midwest Region Honorable Mention.
- UNC played No. 12 Hawaii in the NCCA Tournament and were defeated 3-1 in the first round
- Weber State accepted an invite to the NIVCA? tournament and advanced to the Quarterfinals where they were defeated in five sets by Tulsa. The Wildcats defeated Boise State in the opening round and then beat Wyoming in the following round.
- UNC won the Big Sky Tournament and defeated Weber State in five sets. Kailey Jo Ince was the tournament MVP
- Daisy Schultz was named the league’s regular season MVP
- Three schools placed three individuals on the All-Big Sky first team. Weber State, Montana State, and Northern Colorado.
- NAU’s Abby Akin is a three-time All-Big Sky selection, Heaven Harris and WSU’s Megan Gneiting were two time honorees.
- Northern Colorado had their best season in recent history and finished with a 26-7 record and went 17-1 in conference play. Their only loss came in the middle of the conference schedule against Northern Arizona.
- Weber State made an appearance in the Big Sky Championship game for the first time in 31 years. The Wildcats had one of their best season’s this year and finished 24-8 and 13-5 in the Big Sky and earned a trip to the NIVC Tournament.
- Northern Arizona defeated an SEC team in Flagstaff for the second straight season. The Lumberjacks faced LSU and defeated them in a three-set sweep.
- Weber State went on a five-game winning streak to end the non-conference portion of their schedule. That streak included wins over Kansas State, SMU, Utah Valley, and Utah State.
- Montana State’s Allyssa Rizzo and Northern Arizona’s Abby Akin both were named player of the week three times this year – the most by any player in the Big Sky. Akin was the only player to receive both offensive and defensive accolades this year. Akin was named defensive player of the week twice and offensive player of the week once. Rizzo took home defensive player of the week honors all three times.
- Northern Arizona took home the most weekly awards this season with a total of six. Montana State was second with a total of five weekly award winners. Multiple schools finished with three and two weekly award winners.
