NABC Recognizes #BigSkyMBB For Academics
NABC Team Academic Excellence Awards | NABC Honors Court
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (July 18, 2019) – A pair of Big Sky Conference men’s basketball teams and 18 student-athletes were honored by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) for their work in the classroom for the 2018-19 academic year.
Eastern Washington and Idaho State were no strangers to the NABC Team Academic Excellence Awards with the Eagles earning their sixth-straight nod and the Bengals capturing their third consecutive honor.
The team excellence honor recognizes outstanding academic achievement by a team with a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or better for the 2018-19 season. Eastern Washington carried a 3.55 GPA while Idaho State maintained a 3.02.
In order to earn a NABC Team Academic Excellence Award, institutions in the NCAA, NAIA and NJCAA must count the grade point averages of all men’s student-athletes who competed during the 2018-19 season.
Eastern Washington led NCAA Division I with seven selections on the NABC Honors Court. Steven Beo, Ty Gibson, Jesse Hunt, Tyler Kidd, Mason Peatling, Josh Thomas and Luka Vulikic represented the Eagles on the list.
Idaho State totaled five players with Kelvin Jones, Balint Mocsan, Jared Stutzman, Lyle Sutton and Blake Truman earning honors.
Sacramento State placed three players on the NABC Honors Court with Chibueze Jacobs, Calvin Martin and Izayah Maurihooho-Le’afa being named to the list. Montana saw Michael Oguine and Jamar Akoh earn accolades while Southern Utah’s Matt Johnson rounded out the selections.
In order to be named to the Honors Court, a student-athlete must meet a high standard of academic criteria. The qualifications are as follows:
- Academically a junior or senior and a varsity player.
- Cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.2 or higher at the conclusion of the 2018-19 academic year.
- Students must have matriculated at least one year at their current institution.
- Member of a NCAA Division I, II, III, or NAIA Division I or II institution with a NABC member coach.
