Idaho Women, Lumberjack Men Win All-Sports Awards
OGDEN, Utah (May 15, 2019) – The conference championship season is complete and it’s time to hand out the Big Sky All-Sports Award honors for the 2018-19 school year. Idaho has taken the top spot for the first time in school history to win the Women’s All-Sports Award. For the men, Northern Arizona continues its reign at No. 1 with its sixth consecutive Men’s All-Sports Award.
With six teams finishing in the top four of their sports’ standings, the Vandal women positioned themselves to take the crown at the end of the school year. The women’s basketball team won the regular season crown, while volleyball tied for first. The soccer and golf programs earned second place honors, and if you’re doing the math so far, that’s a lot of points for the Vandals with only a few more sports to consider.
The Vandals beat out Northern Arizona who came in second. The Lumberjack women won the tennis crown and tied for first in volleyball. NAU also registered second place finishes in cross country and indoor track & field.
Weber State finished third in the standings on the women’s side. The Wildcats won titles in soccer and softball, in addition to four top three finishes in cross country, volleyball, tennis, and outdoor track & field.
On the men’s side, the Lumberjacks continued to shine with big numbers from their cross country, indoor and outdoor track & field and tennis programs. NAU took first place in three of those championships and tallied a second-place finish in outdoor track & field to claim a Big Sky record six straight All-Sports Awards.
Montana State had four top four finishes to finish second in the standings. The Bobcats' highest finish was a second place showing at the indoor track & field championships.
Weber State tied for first in football and collected a pair of second place finishes in cross country and golf to round out the top three in the men’s All-Sports standings.
The All-Sports Award is presented to the institution accumulating the most points during the year in men’s sports and women’s sports. Points shall only be awarded in Conference-sponsored sports. In basketball, soccer, football, tennis, softball and volleyball, the all-sports points shall be awarded based on the regular-season standings. In all other sports, all-sports points shall be awarded based on Conference tournament/championship results. Institutional scores are calculated by dividing total points by the number of Conference-sponsored sports the institution sponsors. Indoor and outdoor track and field all-sports points are averaged to create one point for track and field.
