BOULDER CITY, Nev. (April 28, 2019) – Northern Colorado captured the 2019 Big Sky Men’s Golf Championship that was held at the Boulder Creek Golf Club in Boulder City, Nev. The title is the second consecutive for the Bears.

Northern Colorado pulled out a close finish to earn back-to-back conference championships. The Bears pulled out a win with a two-stroke victory over Weber State. The Bears carded 285-277-284 (-18) over the 54-hole championship to earn the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA postseason. Coby Welch placed fifth, Joshua Matz tied for eighth and Jack Castiglia tied for 10th as every player finished in the top 25 and four inside the top 15.

Weber State sat in sixth-place after the first 36 holes and by the time the last nine holes were set to be played, the Wildcats were closing in on the Bears hole-by-hole. Weber State recorded its best team finish since the league brought men’s golf back in 2015.
With game-changing performances by Reese Fisher (-8) and Jayce Frampton (-8), the Wildcats secured a top-two finish and gave the Bears a run for the title down to the final hole, falling short by two strokes.

The Hartford Hawks got a boost from Elias Gross and Matthew Schwab over the three-round tournament. Both gentlemen shot par or better in every round as they each carded 6-under to finish tied for sixth.

The individual race was like going to the movie theatre, there’s no way to pause or fast-forward, you just have to sit and wait until the end. That’s exactly what fans had to do at Boulder Creek this afternoon.

Fisher and Southern Utah’s Jake Vincent were both tied at 9-under with one hole left to play. After Fisher’s ball landed in the hazard, it was the breathing room Vincent needed to capture the 2019 Big Sky Men’s Golf Individual Championship, as he will represent the Big Sky at the NCAA Regionals.

Kudos goes out to Southern Utah’s Ethan Gray, who carded a hole-in-one on hole 12, a par three. The standout single-round score of the tournament went to Sacramento State’s Jeff Car who registered a conference tournament record of 9-under for 63. The previous record of 65 was set five times, the last in 2015.

The 2019 NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championships selections announcement will take place on Wednesday, May 1 at 7 p.m. MT/9 p.m. ET, on GOLF Channel’s Golf Central and streamed live on the Golf Channel website. Eighty-one teams and 45 individuals will be selected to compete at one of six regional championship sites. Six 54-hole regional tournaments will be conducted May 13-15.
