BOULDER CITY, Nev. (April 21, 2019) – Sacramento State captured the 2019 Big Sky Women’s Golf Championship for the second time in three years in record fashion. The Hornets never trailed as the championships were held for the fourth straight year at the Boulder Creek Golf Club in Boulder City, Nev.
The Hornets powered past the competition one round at a time, as they separated themselves from the pack with a 20-stroke victory. Sacramento State shot 290-297-280 (+3) to bring home the third championship title in Hornet history with a Big Sky record 54-hole score of 867. The Hornets third round score of 280 set a new Big Sky record for lowest round. The victors had all five players finish in the top 18.
Guiding the Hornets were all-tournament honorees Corinne Viden and Julia Becker. Viden tied with Northern Colorado’s Beah Cruz to force a playoff between the pair. Cruz won the playoff, resulting in a second-place finish for Viden. Becker shot 6-under on Sunday for a 66 – the third-best single-round score in championship history – as she tied for fifth. Nishtha Madan tied for 11
th place and Sofie Babic tied for 13
th place. Sydney Smith finished tied for 18
th to round out the Hornet squad.
Second through fifth place was separated by five strokes.
Idaho jumped two spots on Sunday to claim the second-place position (296-307-284=887). The Vandals shot 4-under as a team on Sunday to push past their opponents. With three of its players shooting under par in the final round, the Vandals secured their fourth top two finish in a row. Valeria Patino placed fourth to earn all-tournament team accolades.
Third place went to Northern Colorado. The Bears went (299-300-292=891) as a team for their best finish since 2013, where they tied for third place. Cruz led all players from day one and even a friendly playoff with the Hornets’ Viden couldn’t stop her from claiming the trophy. Cruz is the first player in UNC history to win the individual crown since Carleigh Silvers in 2012. Cruz shot 1-under (69-73-73=215) over the course of the tournament.
Portland State tied for fourth-place finish after shooting par on the final day. Three players shot under par and Jasmine Cabajar placed third in the individual standings for all-tournament recognition. Eastern Washington never strayed from the top five all week, as it tied for fourth place with the Vikings, including three players in the top 25.
Sacramento State will represent the Big Sky Conference at the 2019 NCAA Women’s Golf Regional for the first time since 2017. The regionals will be held May 7-9. The NCAA Championships selection show is scheduled for Wednesday, April 24 at 3:30 p.m. MT on the Golf Channel. The NCAA Women’s Golf Championships will be held at Blessings Golf Club in Fayetteville, Ark. from May 17-22..
