OGDEN, Utah (March 5, 2019) -- With only one week left in the regular season therie is a lot to be decided.
- Big Sky women’s basketball enters it’s final week of play before the Big Sky Tournament in Boise, Idaho.
- Idaho has a chance to be crowned the regular season champions if they close out this week with a pair of wins. The Vandals will face the third place Bengals on Saturday in the final game for both teams.
- Northern Colorado isn’t out of the hunt for the op spot at the conference tournament. If Northern Colorado wins out and Idaho losses a game, the Bears hold the tie breaker and can slide to the top of the bracket.
- Northern Colorado’s Savannah Smith was named the Big Sky’s player of the week for the sixth time this season and for the third consecutive week. Smith continues to put up impressive numbers and averaged 34.5 points this week.
- Idaho’s Mikayla Ferenz became the all-time leading scorer in Big Sky women’s basketball this week against Portland State. Ferenz has 2,324 career points so far in her career.
Eastern Washington
- Went 1-1 this past week with a win over Sacramento State. Sitting at 9-9 in the standings, the Eagles are a game out of fifth place and a chance at securing the final bye at the Big Sky Tournament.
- The Eagles will wrap up their regular season schedule this week with match ups against Idaho State and Weber State.
- Violet Kapri Morrow is the fifth leading scorer this season in the Big Sky and is averaging 18.7 points per game.
Idaho
- Idaho can clinch a piece of the regular season title with a victory tis Thursday and win it outright if they take both games.
- The Vandals will face Weber State and then finish the season against in-state rival Idaho State.
- Idaho features the best scoring offense in the conference and is ranked 20th nationally with an average of 77.9 points scored per game.
Idaho State
- Idaho State went 0-1 on the week after dropping their only game of the week to Northern Colorado 61-59.
- The Bengals boast the to scoring defense in the conference and are only allowing 58.6 points per game to opposing teams.
- ISU wraps up their season with games against Eastern Washington and then in-state rival Idaho.
Montana
- Dropped both games they played this week against Southern Utah and Northern Arizona.
- Wrap up the season against Portland State and Sacramento State.
- Is one of three schools that has two or players that rank in the top 10 in assists per game. Mckenzie Johnston and Jace Henderson are averaging 4.0 and 3.8 assists per game respectively.
Montana State
- The Bobcats hold a one game lead for the fifth and final bye at the Big Sky Tournament.
- MSU went 1-1 this week that included a 70-55 victory over Southern Utah.
- The Bobcats face a tough schedule this week but will be at home when they play Sacramento State and Portland State.
Northern Arizona
- NAU picked up two wins this week against Montana and Montana State.
- The Lumberjacks will face Northern Colorado in their only game of the week on Saturday.
- Jacey Bailey went off for 31 points against Montana on Monday night. Bailey is ranked 11th in points scored in conference games this season with an average of 13.4 points per game.
Northern Colorado
- The Bears went 2-0 this week including a big victory over Idaho State, 61-59.
- Savannah Smith continues to cause a problem for opposing defenses. This week she averaged 34.5 points, 5.5 assists, and 3.5 rebounds through the two games.
- UNC is a game out of having the #1 seed in the Big Sky Tournament and they hold the head to head tiebreaker with Idaho. A Vandal’s loss this week could open the door for the Bears to slide into the top seed.
Portland State
- The Vikings went 1-1 on the week including a 76-57 victory over Eastern Washington.
- PSU has the second best scoring offense in the conference this season and is No. 62 in the nation in that category. The Vikings are averaging 72.3 points per game this year.
- The Vikings wrap up their season with match ups against Montana and Montana State.
Sacramento State
- The Hornets faced a tough schedule this week and went 1-1 with match ups against Idaho and Eastern Washington.
- Junior Hannah Friend is the fifth best scorer in the conference during league games and is averaging 18.4 points a game.
- Sacramento State will wrap up their regular season this week against Montana and Montana State.
Southern Utah
- The Thunderbirds picked up a 71-56 win over Montana to start the week but dropped their game to Montana State to finish the week 1-1.
- SUU will play in only one game this week when they travel to Northern Colorado to on Thursday evening.
Weber State
- The Wildcats played in one game this week against Northern Colorado. Weber State fell to the Bears 75-61.
- WSU wraps up their final games of the regular season against Idaho and Eastern Washington.
