PSU's Fortini Collects First #BigSkyTennis Men's Player of the Week Nod

OGDEN, Utah (March 6, 2019) – With a pair of singles win to lead Portland State to a 4-1 start in league play, sophomore Matteo Fortini has been selected as the Big Sky Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Week for the first time in his career.

Fortini won both matches in straight sets at No. 2 singles last week as the Vikings defeated against Montana and Eastern Washington at home.

The Correggio, Italy native began the week with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Montana’s Ludvig Hallgren in a 4-3 victory over the Griz. After the Vikings dropped the doubles point, Fortini won the first of four singles points for PSU.

Fortini won both matches in a 5-2 win over Eastern Washington the following day. At No. 2 doubles, Fortini and Lucas Castelo Branco picked up a 6-0 victory over Manuel Balce and Martin Bats to help the Vikings clinch the doubles point. Fortini followed with the match-clinching win in singles with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Mikayel Khachatryan.

Fortini improved to 8-3 on the season including 3-0 at No. 2 singles while moving to 7-3 at No. 2 doubles.
