SUU's Mijares Collects #BigSkyTennis Men's Player of the Week Nod

OGDEN, Utah (March 27, 2019) – Carrying Southern Utah to two big wins at home over Portland State and Weber State, senior Salvador Mijares has been named the Big Sky Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Week following a 4-0 record last week.

Mijares provided the clincher at No. 1 singles in a 4-3 victory over Portland State on Friday with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Matteo Fortini. The Puerto la Cruz, Venezuela native teamed up with Agustin Tamagnone on court one to help the Thunderbirds clinch the doubles point in a 7-6 nailbiter over Fortini and Tommy Edwards.

In a 6-1 win over in-state foe Weber State on Sunday, Mijares took down Kris van Wyk at No. 1 with a 6-4, 6-4 victory to move him to 11-3 on the season. Mijares and Tamagnone recorded a 6-4 win over van Wyk and Junhao Ye as the duo improved to 4-1.

The two wins moved Southern Utah to third in the Big Sky standings at 4-2, currently riding a four-match win streak.

The Big Sky weekly honor is the first of Mijares’ career.
