FARMINGTON, Utah (November 7, 2019) – After leading the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks to a sweep of the 2019 Big Sky Men’s and Women’s Championship titles, Michael Smith has been named the Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Coach of the Year today, announced today by the league office.

It is the third straight men’s honor for Smith and the second women’s coach of the year honor for the Lumberjack.

The Lumberjack men captured their third straight men’s team title. Northern Arizona took four of the top 10 spots, including 1-2-3-6. The Lumberjack men won every race they competed in this season, as they picked up the conference win.

Smith and his staff coached the women’s team to a first-place finish. The Lumberjacks captured their third title in four years. NAU had two runners in the top five and four in the Top 10 to secure the championship victory. It was the 21st team title for the Lumberjacks.

Both teams will continue their season next week at the NCAA Mountain Regional in Salt Lake City. The NAU men have won the last three mountain region team titles, as they are the reigning and back-to-back-to-back national champions.

The freshman and individual top honors for the Big Sky were announced at the post race award ceremony last Saturday. Montana State’s Camila Noe won both honors on the women’s side, while the Lumberjacks’ Drew Bosley took home both honors for the men.
