OGDEN, Utah (May 9, 2018) – Sacramento State’s Lori Perez has been selected as the 2018 Big Sky Conference Softball Coach of the Year by the league’s head coaches after leading the Hornets to a share of their first regular season title and a No. 1 seed in this week’s Big Sky Championship.

In her fifth season at the helm of the Sacramento State program, Perez captured her first Big Sky coaching honor following a 29-18 overall slate and 14-7 mark in conference play.

Sacramento State’s 29 wins on the year are the most for the program since recording 32 victories in 2008. Perez has led the Hornets to an appearance in the Big Sky Championship in each of her five seasons as head coach and once as an assistant in the league’s inaugural 2013 season.

Perez and the Hornets collected series wins over four of the five teams joining Sacramento State in the conference tournament this week. The Hornets earned series victories over Weber State, North Dakota, Portland State, Montana and Southern Utah. Sacramento State also came away with non-conference wins over Stanford, Santa Clara, Pacific, Fairleigh Dickinson, New Mexico, Howard, Wagner, Cal Poly and UC Santa Barbara.

Sacramento State begins its run for an NCAA Championship berth Thursday at 2:30 p.m. MT against the winner of No. 4 seed Portland State and No. 5 Montana in the Big Sky Championship at Wildcat Softball Field in Ogden.
