Eagles, Aggies, Wildcats Named Co-Big Sky Football Champions

OGDEN, Utah (November 17, 2018) –It was a competitive season for the Big Sky in 2018, and as the final games of the regular season took place today, it was Eastern Washington, UC Davis and Weber State that were named co-Big Sky Champions.
 
The Eagles were the first team to clinch at least a share of the title, as they took down Portland State on Friday night. Eastern Washington’s lone loss in Big Sky play came in the fourth game of league play, and have since gone on a four-game win streak. The crown is the 10thin school history and the first since 2016 for Eastern Washington. It’s also the first championship for head coach Aaron Best, who is in his second season.
 
The Aggies earned the hardware for the first time in school history. UC Davis opened league play on a six-game win streak, before getting tripped up last week, but fighting back to close out the season with a W and a school-record eight league wins. It’s the first conference championship for second-year head coach Dan Hawkins.
 
The Wildcats have earned the Big Sky’s automatic bid to the playoffs via tiebreaker, as they captured the conference championship for the second consecutive season. Weber State dropped its second game in conference play and has since gone on a six-game win streak – the longest current streak in the Big Sky – to earn the fifth championship in school history and the second for head coach Jay Hill.
 
All three teams finished 9-2 overall and 7-1 in Big Sky play, and went undefeated at home. The trio ranked in the Top 10 of the FCS polls heading into this weekend. 
 
The 2018 NCAA Football Championship Subdivision Playoff Selection Show will be on Sunday, Nov. 18 at 9:30 a.m. PT/10:30 a.m. MT live on ESPNU. The field is comprised of 24 teams with 10 automatic playoff bids given to each FCS conference. Playoffs begin with the first round on Nov. 24, the second round on Dec. 1, the quarterfinals on Dec. 7 and 8 and the semifinals on Dec. 14 and 15. The NCAA Division I Football Championship game will be played in Frisco, Texas, on Saturday, Jan. 5 at 9 a.m. PT/10 a.m. MT on ESPN2.
