OGDEN, Utah (May 12, 2017) – Montana will play for the Big Sky Conference championship thanks to a 2-1 win in a marathon 10-inning contest against No. 1 seed Weber State. The final day of the 2017 Big Sky Conference Championship presented by Red Lion Hotels®.
Saturday’s action begins with Idaho State and Weber State facing off at 11 a.m. with the winner advancing to face Montana at 1:30 p.m. If Montana wins, they will win clinch the conference championship.
No. 3 Sacramento State opened up Friday’s action with a five-inning 15-0 win over No. 4 Southern Utah in the day’s first elimination game. The Hornets blasted a tournament and school-record tying four home runs to go along with 14 hits in the win.
No. 6 Idaho State eliminated North Dakota 4-1 in the second game on Friday to set up an elimination game against the Hornets. ISU jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the third inning against UND held on for the win.
In the battle between the top seeds it was No. 2 Montana who came out on top after a marathon 10-inning contest. With the game knotted at 1-1, Sydney Stites blasted a solo homer to center field to take a 2-1 win. Michaela Hood went the distance for UM in the win while Kirtlyn Bohling also pitched 10 innings in the loss.
In the final game of the day, Idaho State held off a late rally from Sacramento State to pick up a 9-7 win. Ashlyn Ames went the distance in both Friday wins. She tossed 14 innings, allowing eight runs, two walks and striking out six.
Idaho State had 21 hits on the day and was led by Kacie Burnett going 5-7 with two RBIs and two runs scored.
