OGDEN, Utah (May 13, 2016) – Portland State’s Brianna Celaya set a new PSU postseason record and Big Sky tournament record with four hits but it was not enough as the No. 6 Vikings fell to No. 4 Montana 14-8 in the first elimination game of the 2016 Big Sky Conference Softball Championship presented by Red Lion® Hotels.
Montana had a strong start to the game capped by a two-RBI triple by Delene Colburn. Portland State battled back in the bottom of the inning to tie the game at 4-4 thanks to two two-RBI hits by Brianna Celaya and Melissa Masters.
Celaya struck again in the bottom of the second with another RBI single that gave the Vikings their first lead of the game.
Montana put seven runs on the board in the top of the fifth in a rally that was capped by a RBI single by Colburn that plated Sydney Stites. The Grizzlies added three more in the top of the sixth but PSU responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning including a lead-off homer by Celaya.
Colburn finished the game with three hits in five plate appearances and four RBIs. Celaya went 4-for-5 with four RBIs and two runs scored.
Sara Stephenson came on in relief and picked up the win for UM while Alyssa Burk was tagged with the loss for PSU.
Montana will face the winner of Southern Utah and Sacramento State at approximately 5 p.m. Mountain.
