OGDEN, Utah (May 12, 2016) – The No. 4 seed Montana Grizzlies picked up their first postseason win in program history as they topped No. 5 Southern Utah 10-6 in the opening game of the 2016 Big Sky Softball Championship presented by Red Lion® Hotels.
Montana relief pitcher, Colleen Driscoll picked up the win while Kirsten Hostetler was tagged with the loss for SUU in just 0.1 innings.
The Grizzlies jumped put eight runs on the board in the bottom the first. The highlight of the inning was Delene Colburn’s 3-run homerun that got the UM scoring streak going.
SUU’s Kendall Kapitzke got the Thunderbirds on the board in the top of the second with a lead-off solo homer that may have been the longest ball hit at the Weber State Softball Complex.
The Thunderbirds scored two in the fourth and two more in the fifth to cut the UM lead to 9-6. The Griz answered in the bottom of the fifth when Sydney Stites plated Alex Wardlow with a RBI single to extend the lead to 10-6.
Stites finished the game with three hits in four at-bats with two RBIs and two runs scored. The Grizzlies will face the No. 1 seed Weber State Wildcats at approximately 2:30 p.m. Mountain Time. SUU will return to action as they face the loser of the tournament’s fourth game at approximately 12 p.m.
