OGDEN, Utah (April 9, 2016) – Idaho State picked up its fifth straight win and moved into third place in the Big Sky Conference softball rankings while Sacramento State moved into first place on Saturday with a win at Northern Colorado. Weber State and Southern Utah saw their game cancelled due to rain in Cedar City, Utah.
Idaho State 12, Montana 9 -- The Bengals moved to 17-17 overall and 5-2 in Big Sky play as they held off a determined Montana (13-23, 4-5 BSC) team. Maddy Hickman led the Bengals offensively as she went 4-5 at the plate with the game-winning homer, two runs scored and five RBIs. Ashlyn Ames came on in relief and picked up the win in 1.1 innings of action.
Montana scored seven runs in the top of the sixth but ISU managed to score three in the bottom of the seventh on Hickman’s walk-off home run. Montana reliever, Maggie Reitz was pegged with the loss in one inning of action. Makenna McGill had a strong performance in the lead-off spot going 3-4 with a RBI and two runs scored.
Sacramento State 4, Northern Colorado 1 – Celina Matthias moved to 11-9 on the season as she pitched seven innings with just one earned run in Sacramento State’s win at Northern Colorado. The Hornets moved to 8-1 in Big Sky play and sit atop the standings. Matthias fanned seven Bears (4-27, 0-9 BSC) batters in the outing. Sydney Rasmussen went 4-4 with a triple and a run scored at the top of the order for the Hornets.
Jayme Reddacliff was tagged with the loss for the Bears in 6.1 innings. Sarah Fitzherbert and Lauren Paige went 2-4 at the plate for UNC with Paige driving in the team’s lone run.
North Dakota 9, Portland State 3 – North Dakota (12-26, 1-6 BSC) scored five runs in the fifth and three in the sixth to pick up a road win at Portland State (11-21, 5-4 BSC). Kaylin VanDomelen picked up a complete-game win with three strikeouts and three earned runs. Mary Martin drove in three of the Fighting Hawks’ runs as she finished the day with three hits. Autumn Cervantez picked up two RBIs and finished the day 2-4 with a run scored.
Karyn Wright took the loss for the Vikings in one inning of action. Brianna Celaya went 2-4 on Saturday and finished the series with a .700 average.
