RENO, Nev. (March 7, 2016) – The Weber State Wildcats took full advantage of being involved in the postseason.
Weber State had never made the conference tournament under Bethann Ord, under the previous format, and the Wildcats’ improved play this season helped them gain a top-six seed in the new tournament format.
Weber State had four scorers finish in double figures, and the Wildcats beat Portland State, 91-68, in the opening round of the 2016 Big Sky Women’s Basketball Championships.
The Wildcats held the Vikings to 34.4 percent shooting (22-of-64), holding Portland State to two double-digit scorers. Weber’s bench also was successful throughout the game, outscoring Portland State’s bench, 48-12. Turnovers also plagued Portland State, as Weber scored 20 points off the Vikings’ turnovers.
Weber’s Yarden Danan led all scorers with 24 points, making 9-of-11 shots. Danan also made 6-of-7 three-point shots. Brittney Dunbar, the Big Sky's Defensive Player of the Year, scored 17 points, with four steals.
Ashley Torres led the Vikings with 23 points.
