Weber State advances to WBI final with win over USC-Upstate

OGDEN, Utah (March 23, 2016) - It's rare that records are broken, but that's exactly what the Weber State Wildcats did in the WBI semifinals Wednesday.

The Wildcats moved their record to 23-11 with a 79-53 win over USC-Upstate, earning a berth in the WBI championship game Saturday. With the win, the 2015-16 Wildcats became the winningest women's basketball team in school history. 

Weber State trailed early, before responding with a 22-11 run in the second quarter to take a 41-28 halftime lead. The Wildcats were nearly unstoppable on offense, shooting 57.7 percent (15-of-26) in the first half, including 6-of-11 from three-point range. Weber State finished with a shooting percentage of 53.6 percent.

In stark contrast, USC Upstate struggled on offense, thanks to a strong Wildcats defensive attack. USC Upstate finished with a final shooting percentage of 33.9 percent (20-of-59), as they were outscored, 38-25, in the second half. Weber also forced 19 turnovers, and scored 19 points from those turnovers.

Four Wildcats finished in double figures, with Deeshyra Thomas scoring 20 points to lead Weber State. Emily Drake contributed 17 points, including a 5-of-6 performance from three-point range. Brittney Dunbar also posted 17 points for the Wildcats.

Weber State will play Louisiana-Lafayette in the finals of the WBI Saturday, with tipoff scheduled for 3 p.m. MST. The game will be played in Louisiana.
