OGDEN, Utah (February 29, 2016) – The Road To Reno is in its final week and Big Sky Conference tournament seeds are still up for grabs. Weber State needs one win to clinch the regular season title and a No. 1 seed at the conference tournament, while Montana needs two wins and two WSU losses to take the regular season crown and top seed.
The other first-round byes are still up in the air as Idaho, Eastern Washington, North Dakota and Idaho State are all tied with 10-6 conference records. The top four seeds in the conference tournament receive a first-round bye.
What is known is that Montana State, Portland State, Northern Colorado, Sacramento State, Southern Utah and Northern Arizona cannot capture a top four seed in the conference tournament and will begin play in Reno on Tuesday, March 8.
Below is the conference tiebreaking policy.
TIE-BREAKER
- The won-lost percentage record of the teams in regular season Conference play will determine tournament seeding.
- The team with the best won-lost percentage in Conference play will be the host and seeded #1, the next best won-lost percentage in Conference play will be seeded #2, and so forth through all the seeds.
- Procedures for determining all tournament seeding will be:
- Two-team tie
- Results of head-to-head competition (winning percentage) during the regular season.
- Each team’s record vs. the team (winning percentage) occupying the highest position in the final regular standings, and then continuing down through the standings until one team gains an advantage.
- When arriving at another group of tied teams while comparing records, use each team’s record (winning percentage) against the collective tied teams as a group (prior to that group’s own tie-breaking procedure), rather than the performance against individual tied teams.
- RPI Rankings
- Coin toss conducted by the Commissioner or designee.
- Multiple-team tie
- Results of collective head-to-head competition (winning percentage) during the regular season among the tied teams.
- If more than two teams are still tied, each of the tied team’s record (winning percentage) vs. the team occupying the highest position in the final regular season standings, and then continuing down through the standings, eliminating teams with inferior records, until one team gains an advantage.
- When arriving at another group of tied teams while comparing records, use each team’s record (winning percentage) against the collective tied teams as a group (prior to that group’s own tie-breaking procedure), rather than the performance against individual tied teams.
- If at any point the multiple-team tie is reduced to two teams, the two-team tie-breaking procedure will be applied.
- RPI Rankings
- Coin toss conducted by the Commissioner or designee.
