OGDEN, Utah (January 16, 2016) – Eastern Washington sophomore Bogdan Bliznyuk posted the first triple-double in school history while Montana and Weber State picked up road wins to remain unbeaten in Big Sky play in Saturday's men's basketball action.
Eastern Washington 96, Northern Arizona 73 – Bliznyuk scored 11 points, pulled down 14 rebounds and dished 10 assists to earn the first triple-double in EWU history and the first in the Big Sky since 2013. Senior Venky Jois scored 21 points, eight rebounds and a pair of blocked shots to help Eastern Washington (9-8, 3-2 BSC) earn its third straight win.
Ako Kaluna led NAU (3-13, 1-4 BSC) in scoring once again with 18 points. Kris Yanku added a team-high six rebounds for the Lumberjacks.
Montana 65, North Dakota 61 – Montana (11-6, 6-0 BSC) senior Martin Breunig scored 27 points, including the Grizzlies’ last five, to lead Montana to its sixth Big Sky win of the season. Breunig also earned a double-double with 12 rebounds.
Junior Quinton Hooker led UND (8-9, 3-3 BSC) with 20 points and Drick Bernstine added 14 for the home team, but the Fighting Hawks but a late scoring drought spelled doom for UND. After pulling ahead 61-55 with 3:37 to play, the Hawks failed to score for the remainder of the game.
Northern Colorado 78, Montana State 76 -- A clutch pair of redshirt sophomore center, Jeremy Verhagen free throws with 26 seconds to play sealed the win for Northern Colorado (5-13, 2-4 BSC) over Montana State (7-11, 2-4 BSC) on Saturday night, snapping the team's four-game losing streak. Verhagen finished the game with just six points while Dallas Anglin led the Bears in scoring yet again with 20 points on 5-of-11 shooting.
Tyler Hall led MSU and all scorers with 22 points on 8-of-16 shooting including 5-of-10 from behind the arc. Zach Green led MSU on the boards with eight rebounds.
Weber State 85, Sacramento State 74 – Weber State (13-5, 5-0 BSC) snapped Sacramento State’s (8-8, 1-4 BSC) 11-game home conference winning streak Saturday night. Joel Bolomboy and Jeremy Senglin were the only two Wildcat starters in double digits with 19 and 15 points respectively. All but two players on the Wildcats’ roster scored at least a point as WSU shot 57.1 percent on the night.
Sacramento State had two players with 23 points as Justin Strings hit 7-of-15 from the floor and Marcus Graves knocked down 9-of-14 field goals. Sacramento State registered 10 steals in the game with Nick Hornsby leading the way with four.
Idaho State 73, Portland State 70 -- Idaho State (7-10, 2-3 BSC) picked up its first road win in conference play with a win at Portland State (6-10, 2-3 BSC). Four Bengals scored in double figures led by Ethan Telfair's 25 points, 11 assists and six rebounds. Telfair was 8-of-18 from the field and 8-of-9 from the charity stripe.
PSU forward Isaiah Pineiro scored 15 points and pulled down nine rebounds to go along with three assists and three steals for the Vikings.
Southern Utah 85, Idaho 83 (OT) – In the wildest game of the night, Southern Utah (4-11, 2-3 BSC) picked up an overtime win at Idaho (11-7, 3-2 BSC). The Thunderbirds were led by Trey Kennedy with 18 points on 4-of-11 shooting and 8-of-11 from the free-throw line. Race Parsons chipped in 15 points with two crucial 3-pointers.
Victor Sanders, who was coming off a career-high 33 points Thursday night, scored 29 points before fouling out late in the second half. Sanders shot 8-of-17 from the field with four 3-pointers on eight attempts. He also hit three of his nine free throws to send the game into overtime.
