Idaho State clinched the Big Sky Conference regular season softball championship and the right to host the conference tournament for third straight year Friday with a doubleheader sweep of North Dakota. Sacramento State and Weber State clinched tournament seeds with doubleheader sweeps as well. The fourth and final tournament bid will go to the winner of tomorrow’s game between Northern Colorado and Southern Utah.
The Bengal softball team swept a doubleheader vs. North Dakota on Friday at Miller Ranch Stadium, winning two five inning games, 12-0 and 8-0. Sophie Slagle earned the game 1 win, allowing one hit, one walk while striking out four in the shutout. Ashlyn Ames allowed one hit and one walk with two strikeouts in the game 2 victory. Nine different Bengals had hits Friday afternoon. Gabby Lopez led the way with a 5-6 afternoon with five RBIs, one double and three runs scored.
The Weber State allowed just one unearned run on its way to a doubleheader sweep of Montana on Friday afternoon at Wildcat Softball Field. WSU topped the Grizzlies 2-1 in the opening game, riding a four-hit, six-strikeout performance from senior right-hander MaCauley Flint to the win, and then turned on the jets on the back end, rolling to a 7-0 victory. Junior third baseman Alyson Kulp was 4-for-6 with five runs scored, and junior shortstop Aubrey Whitmer went 3-for-6 as the Wildcats improved to 12-6 in Big Sky Conference play and 34-17 overall.
Senior Caitlin Brooks struck out 13 batters in the opener, freshman Zamari Hinton combined for five hits over two games and junior Sasha Margulies extended her hitting streak to 15 games as Sacramento State swept the series-opening doubleheader at Portland State. The Hornets won the opener behind Brooks by a 3-1 score, before overcoming a 3-1 sixth-inning deficit in the nightcap to win, 10-3, in eight innings.
SUU picked up wins as Ashley Ostler and Katie Greenberg pitched complete games with Ostler winning the first game 9-7 and Greenberg getting the win in game two, 5-3. Greenberg allowed just three hits in game two and just one run before the Bears’ Molly Ryan homered in the seventh inning to bring the score to its final, 5-3. SUU will have a chance to clinch the final Big Sky tournament bid tomorrow at 1 p.m. Mountain if they defeat UNC.
