MOSCOW, Idaho (November 8, 2015) –
Northern Colorado won its first ever Big Sky Conference soccer championship Sunday afternoon on penalty kicks. The No. 2 seeded Bears fought No. 1 seed Idaho to a 1-1 draw in regulation but three saves by Madeline Burdick in the penalty shootout helped lift UNC to a 3-0 shootout win.

Burdick was named the Big Sky tournament MVP for her efforts while teammates Rebecca Lancia, Adrienne Jordan, Mariel Gutierrez and Ambree Brelin joined her on the All-Tournament team.

Idaho’s Elixis Schlossarek got the Vandals on the board in the 12th minute on a cross from Oliva Baggerly and Kayla Watanabe. All three would be honored on the All-Tournament team.

UNC equalized in the 57th minute when Gutierrez tapped in a pass from Jacqui Pulley.

Neither team could find a breakthrough through regulation and extra time, sending the game to penalty kicks. In the PK session, Burdick rejected three straight UNC shots and Gutierrez kicked in the deciding penalty kick to hand UNC its first-ever Big Sky championship.

The 2015 NCAA tournament selection show with air on NCAA.com Monday at 4 p.m. Eastern. The 2015 NCAA Division I women’s soccer championship begins Friday, November 13.
